Growing up, patent leather was only seen on dress shoes that were worn once a year. Now it’s everywhere and seen in every color under the sun. Entire outfits are being devoted to the shiny material. Invented in the early 1800s in New Jersey, this glossy, plastic coated leather adds an edge to any outfit. For a classy look, add a patent leather belt, and for those of you with an adventurous side, try a patent leather trench.

Confused on what to wear with patent leather? If you’re using it as a main feature of your outfit, play down your other accessories. As a belt, shoe, hat, or bag, patent leather is the perfect complimentary accessory to just about any outfit. Never mix patent leather with sequins or rhinestones. Way too much shine.

Every designer seems to have developed the metallic touch. Whether it’s a light frosting or full blown lame, everything from dresses to coats and shoes to belts has been given a metallic makeover. What to wear with metallics?
